This guide covers solar thermal hot-water systems for homes and larger buildings. It is different from the solar PV panel guide, which makes electricity.
Solar water heater price by capacity
The Haryana Renewable Energy Department currently publishes the approximate table below on its solar water-heating page. The department says the figures include the cold-water tank, hot-water tank, support structure, heat exchanger, electrical backup, installation and commissioning. Extra piping is charged separately. The page labels these as indicative costs and does not identify them as a 2026 nationwide market price.
| Capacity | ETC system | FPC system | Useful first question |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100 LPD | ₹17,000 | ₹24,000 | Does the daily hot-water need fit? |
| 200 LPD | ₹30,000 | ₹39,000 | Is the roof strong and clear? |
| 300 LPD | ₹44,000 | ₹55,600 | How long is the pipe run? |
| 400 LPD | ₹56,000 | ₹69,312 | Is a pressurised design needed? |
| 500 LPD | ₹70,000 | ₹88,000 | Who will service it locally? |
LPD means litres per day. These figures are an indicative public reference, not a live price list for every Indian city. Compare current written quotes with taxes, stand, plumbing, pressure equipment, backup and warranty shown separately.
ETC versus FPC: what changes?
An evacuated tube collector, or ETC, uses glass tubes with a vacuum layer that reduces heat loss. A flat plate collector, or FPC, uses an insulated box with an absorber plate under glass. Both can provide hot water when the system is sized and installed well.
| Choice | Can suit | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| ETC | A common domestic system where initial price matters | Tube quality, breakage, replacement, water pressure and service |
| FPC | A design where collector strength, pressure or longer service life matters | Collector standard, tank quality, corrosion and local installer skill |
MNRE lists standards for evacuated tube and flat plate systems, tanks, testing, performance prediction, durability and code of practice. Ask for the exact model and the applicable standard instead of relying on a “premium” label.
Choose capacity from daily hot-water use
MNRE says 100 to 500 LPD systems suit domestic use. Start with the people using hot water, the number of bathrooms, the morning and evening pattern, and whether the system must serve a kitchen or another use. Keep an electric backup for cloudy days and periods when demand is higher than storage.
A 200 LPD tank does not mean that 200 litres of hot water is always available at the same temperature. Weather, inlet-water temperature, draw-off time, mixing, pipe loss and backup settings affect the result. Ask the installer to explain the expected temperature and recovery time.
Roof, plumbing and pressure checks
- Check the roof’s strength and the support structure before delivery.
- Keep the collector free from shade for the useful sun hours.
- Use a short, insulated pipe route where possible.
- Confirm whether your home needs a pressurised or non-pressurised design.
- Plan access to the tank, tubes, valves and backup heater.
- Keep the collector and drain path away from unsafe roof edges.
Extra pipe length, a high building, hard water, a weak roof or a difficult lift can change the price. Put each extra in the quote.
How to think about electricity savings
Solar thermal saves electricity only when it replaces an electric heater or another paid heat source. For an illustration, if a system avoids 4 kWh a day for 250 days at ₹8 per unit, the avoided energy cost is ₹8,000 a year. The real result depends on weather, use, backup, tariff and maintenance. Use this as a calculation method, not a payback promise.
Compare the solar heater with a geyser, gas water heater or heat pump on purchase price, running cost, roof work, backup and service. A cheaper system that cannot meet your hot-water timing is not a saving.
Maintenance and handover
Ask what happens when a tube breaks, a valve leaks, the tank corrodes or the backup stops. Save the model, serial number, installer contact, warranty, commissioning date and pressure settings. Check for leaks after installation and keep the roof clear of stored items.
Do not climb on a wet roof or handle hot pressurised water without training. Use a service person for work near the tank, collector and electrical backup.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of a solar water heater in India?
Haryana’s renewable energy department publishes an indicative installed-cost table from ₹17,000 for a 100 LPD evacuated tube system to ₹88,000 for a 500 LPD flat plate system. It is a public planning reference, not a current nationwide market price. Get local written quotes because state, brand, pressure, roof, piping and installation can change the final cost.
What size solar water heater is right for a home?
MNRE describes 100 to 500 litres per day as a domestic range. Start with the number of people, bathing habits, water temperature, available roof and backup plan. A larger tank is not always a better fit.
What is the difference between ETC and FPC solar water heaters?
ETC uses evacuated glass tubes and is often the lower-cost option. FPC uses a flat plate collector and can suit some pressure, durability and hot-water designs. Compare the full system, service and local water conditions rather than the label alone.
Does a solar water heater work in monsoon or winter?
It can still heat water with lower output when sunlight is weak. Plan an electric or other backup if hot water is needed every day. Ask the installer how the controller, tank and backup heater work together.
Does a solar water heater need electricity?
The collector uses sunlight, but some systems can include an electric backup, pump or controller. Check the quote to see whether those parts are included and how much backup power they use.
How much roof space does a solar water heater need?
The collector and tank need a clear, strong area with safe access. The exact space depends on capacity, collector type, tank design and support structure. Keep plumbing runs short where possible.
Does the government subsidy for rooftop solar cover a solar water heater?
Do not assume that PM Surya Ghar rooftop PV assistance covers a solar thermal water heater. The products use different technology and rules. Check a current state or municipal programme if one is advertised.
