This page covers a grid-connected ground-mounted solar PV project. It does not replace a detailed project report, electrical study, land title check or lender review. A rooftop commercial project follows a different cost path. See our commercial rooftop solar guide for that case.
What “1 MW” should mean in the proposal
Ask whether the 1 MW label refers to DC module capacity or AC inverter export capacity. The difference changes module count, inverter size, clipping, grid approval and generation. Ask for the DC to AC ratio, expected losses and the point of measurement for the output guarantee.
Also record the project type. A private plant selling under a PPA, a captive plant serving one consumer, an open access project and a PM-KUSUM Component A plant do not use the same buyer, approval or tariff route.
1 MW solar plant cost: build a real cost model
Two public installer guides published in 2026 quote ₹3.5 crore to ₹4.5 crore for a turnkey 1 MW plant. See the Sun Wave 2026 cost breakdown and the Quickest Solar CRM 2026 cost guide. Their scopes differ, so use the range only as a first budget. An older official MNRE modelling document used ₹3.61 crore per MW as a 2022 reference. It is useful context, not a 2026 EPC quote.
| Cost block | What it can include | Why it moves |
|---|---|---|
| PV modules | Modules, delivery, testing and serial records | Module type, domestic content, wattage, supply date and taxes |
| Inverters and electrical BOS | Inverters, transformers, switchgear, cables and protection | AC voltage, grid code, cable length and redundancy |
| Structures and civil work | Mounting, piles, roads, drainage, fencing and control room | Soil, slope, flood risk, wind and local construction |
| Evacuation and connection | Substation, line, bay, metering and grid studies | Distance to the approved point and available capacity |
| Development and reserves | Land, survey, permissions, insurance, security and contingency | Title, lease, local approvals and project risk |
Ask every EPC bidder for a bill of quantities. Compare the same scope. A headline “per MW” price is not comparable when one bid excludes land and evacuation and the other includes them.
Land requirement and site due diligence
The Central Electricity Authority’s draft National Electricity Plan gives about 4 acres per MW as a planning reference for large ground-mounted solar after higher-wattage modules reduced the earlier land need. Treat it as usable-array land, not a promise that any 4-acre parcel will work.
Before paying for land, check title, lease length, access, nearby homes, flood history, soil, drainage, tree cover, right of way and the distance to the approved grid point. A cheap parcel can become expensive if a line, road, substation or boundary change is needed.
Keep room for module rows, cleaning, fire access, security, cable routes, water management and future repairs. Ask the designer for a stamped layout that shows every exclusion.
How much electricity can 1 MW produce?
For a first model, test 1.3 to 1.7 million units in a year. This is an inference from Indian rooftop yield ranges and large-project design factors, not a government guarantee. Radiation, module temperature, soiling, shade, inverter clipping, availability, grid curtailment and degradation all affect the delivered number.
| Model case | Annual units | Use in the decision |
|---|---|---|
| Downside | 1.3 million | Stress-test weak solar resource, losses and downtime |
| Central | 1.5 million | Compare with the energy model and buyer terms |
| Strong | 1.7 million | Show upside only when the site model supports it |
Do not turn annual units into monthly income without a tariff and a buyer. A PPA can pay for delivered energy, while a captive project values the units at the avoided tariff. The two cases can have very different results.
Find the buyer before building
A plant needs a clear route for its electricity. That can be a DISCOM PPA, a captive or group-captive arrangement, a state scheme, open access or another approved contract. Confirm the tariff, term, payment security, scheduling, curtailment, change in law, transmission charges and dispute route.
PM-KUSUM Component A supports decentralised ground-mounted grid-connected plants up to 2 MW in its scheme framework, with power purchased by the DISCOM at a tariff set by the state regulator. It is not an automatic subsidy for every 1 MW project. Read the current state notice and the PPA before using the scheme in a financial model.
Our state rules guide explains how to find the regulator, nodal agency and DISCOM. The finance guide covers why EMI alone is not a project return.
Include operations, replacement and grid risk
- Budget cleaning, vegetation control, security, insurance and monitoring.
- Record module and inverter warranties, response times and spare-parts terms.
- Plan for inverter replacement or major repair during the project life.
- Track availability, performance ratio, curtailment and export-meter readings.
- Confirm who pays for grid outages, meter faults and forced shutdowns.
- Keep a reserve for roads, drainage, fencing and storm damage.
Land and panels can remain useful for many years, but a project still has operating costs. A financial model that counts only the EPC bill and the full theoretical generation is incomplete.
Project checks before you sign
- Define DC and AC capacity in every document.
- Get a site layout, generation model and loss assumptions.
- Complete land title, lease, access and environmental checks.
- Obtain written grid capacity and evacuation responsibility.
- Secure the buyer, tariff and payment terms before final debt.
- Compare at least two EPC bills of quantity with the same scope.
- Model downside generation, delays, curtailment and payment delay.
- Ask a qualified engineer and finance adviser to review the final DPR.
Frequently asked questions
What is the cost of a 1 MW solar power plant in India?
Two public installer guides published in 2026 place a turnkey 1 MW ground-mounted plant near ₹3.5 crore to ₹4.5 crore. This is a market reading, not a fixed price. Land, grid evacuation, development, taxes, finance and unusual site work can sit outside the quoted scope. Use a current EPC quote and a site-specific bill of quantities before investing.
How much land is needed for a 1 MW solar plant?
About 4 acres is a useful early planning reference for a large ground-mounted plant. The final parcel can need more land for roads, drainage, setbacks, slopes, substation space, transmission and irregular boundaries.
How many units does a 1 MW solar plant generate?
A first feasibility model can test about 1.3 to 1.7 million units a year, depending on solar resource, design, losses, downtime and the meaning of MW in the proposal. This is an estimate, not a guaranteed generation number.
Can a farmer sell power from a 1 MW solar plant?
A farmer or eligible project developer may use a scheme or contract route such as PM-KUSUM Component A where the state and DISCOM open that route. The buyer, tariff, land, grid and project conditions must be confirmed in the current state notice and power purchase agreement.
Does a 1 MW plant get a central subsidy?
Do not assume a general subsidy. Support depends on the project type and active scheme. PM-KUSUM has its own components and state implementation. A normal private plant needs its own financing and commercial model.
What is excluded from a 1 MW project cost?
Land purchase or lease, taxes, finance interest, evacuation, substation upgrades, transmission, development, approvals, security, insurance, drainage, road work and replacement reserves may sit outside an EPC headline price.
Is a 1 MW solar plant profitable?
Profit depends on tariff, generation, debt, land cost, curtailment, taxes, operating cost and payment terms. A single monthly income number is not reliable. Build conservative, central and downside cases.
