What is the latest news?
On 4 August 2026, the Press Information Bureau said that more than 50.06 lakh homes were benefiting from rooftop solar under PM Surya Ghar.
The government update also said that July 2026 added 5.06 lakh homes. It was the highest monthly number since the scheme started. About one lakh more homes were joining every six days at that time.
These are national numbers. The speed in your city can be different. Vendor work, DISCOM approval, meter change and subsidy payment may still take time.

What does this mean for your family?
The scheme is now working at a much larger scale. More vendors, banks and DISCOM teams have handled these projects. This can make the process easier to understand than it was at the start.
High demand can also create delays. A busy vendor may promise a fast installation but take longer. A DISCOM may have a queue for inspection or meter work. Ask for a written timeline. Link each payment to a clear stage.
Do not choose a vendor only because the vendor says the subsidy is guaranteed. Check the vendor on the official portal. Read the full quote. Keep control of your phone number, OTP and bank details.
Does solar mean a zero electricity bill?
The government said nearly 19 lakh homes were receiving zero electricity bills. This does not mean every solar home will get a zero bill.
Your bill depends on how much power the system makes, how much power you use, your tariff and the net metering rules in your state. Fixed charges, meter charges and taxes may remain.

Has the home subsidy changed?
The August update reported faster installations and higher total subsidy payments. It did not announce a new subsidy rate for individual homes.
For an eligible home in most states, the normal central support is ₹30,000 per kW for the first 2 kW and ₹18,000 for the next 1 kW. The normal maximum is ₹78,000. Listed special category states and territories use higher rates, with a normal maximum of ₹85,800.

Five checks before you apply
- Use the official portal. Apply at pmsuryaghar.gov.in.
- Check your roof. Mark shade, water tanks, weak areas and the space needed for safe access.
- Use your electricity bills. Look at units used over the last 12 months. Do not size solar from the bill amount alone.
- Compare at least three quotes. Match the panel, inverter, structure, protection, warranty and total price.
- Keep every record. Save the application, quote, invoice, equipment serial numbers, inspection papers and bank proof.
Fast growth is good news. A careful home check is still more important than the national number.
