What is the latest news?
On 4 August 2026, the Press Information Bureau said that more than 50.06 lakh homes were benefiting from rooftop solar under PM Surya Ghar.
The government update also said that July 2026 added 5.06 lakh homes. It was the highest monthly number since the scheme started. About one lakh more homes were joining every six days at that time.
These are national numbers. The speed in your city can be different. Vendor work, DISCOM approval, meter change and subsidy payment may still take time.

What does this mean for your family?
The scheme is now working at a much larger scale. More vendors, banks and DISCOM teams have handled these projects. This can make the process easier to understand than it was at the start.
High demand can also create delays. A busy vendor may promise a fast installation but take longer. A DISCOM may have a queue for inspection or meter work. Ask for a written timeline. Link each payment to a clear stage.
Do not choose a vendor only because the vendor says the subsidy is guaranteed. Check the vendor on the official portal. Read the full quote. Keep control of your phone number, OTP and bank details.
How quickly did the programme grow?
The government said the daily installation pace increased 3.2 times over nine months. It rose from 5,038 installations a day in October 2025 to nearly 16,328 a day in July 2026. July added 5.06 lakh beneficiary households.
At that scale, more households are registering, checking application status and moving through vendor, bank and DISCOM stages at the same time. National growth does not predict how long one application will take in your area.
Track the official portal stage rather than relying on a verbal completion date. Feasibility, installation, net meter work, inspection, commissioning and subsidy redemption are different stages. A delay at one stage should be raised with the party that controls it.
Does solar mean a zero electricity bill?
The government said nearly 19 lakh homes were receiving zero electricity bills. This does not mean every solar home will get a zero bill.
Your bill depends on how much power the system makes, how much power you use, your tariff and the net metering rules in your state. Fixed charges, meter charges and taxes may remain.

Has the home subsidy changed?
The August update reported faster installations and higher total subsidy payments. It did not announce a new subsidy rate for individual homes — the per-kW rates, state categories and ₹78,000/₹85,800 household maximums are unchanged. What the loan and vendor numbers show
The August update said concessional loans at 5.75 percent had been sanctioned for 21.87 lakh applicants. It also said 17.5 lakh installations had been completed through loan finance. The rate was described as linked to the repo rate plus 50 basis points, so a current applicant must check the live lender offer.
A scheme-linked loan is still a debt. Compare processing fees, insurance, tenure, floating-rate changes, prepayment and total repayment. Confirm whether the subsidy reduces the loan principal and how the repayment schedule changes.
The update counted 34,219 registered vendors, of whom 29,469 were active. More choice can help, but registration is not a ranking. Compare exact equipment, roof design, gross price, payment stages, workmanship cover and service in your city.
Can a household earn from surplus power?
The government reported that more than 12 lakh households earned ₹421 crore from surplus power in the 2024 to 2025 financial year. It described an average of about ₹3,500 for the households that exported.
This is a programme result, not a promised payment. Export value depends on the state regulation, DISCOM billing and the amount left after the home uses solar directly. An oversized system can send more units to the grid without creating the same value as avoided retail electricity.
Read the current net metering or net billing order before using export income in a payback calculation. Keep fixed charges and seasonal imports in the estimate.
Which process changes matter to applicants?
The official update said rooftop systems up to 10 kW had a deemed approval and feasibility waiver. It also said 32 states and Union Territories had removed application and net metering charges. The National Portal had digital net metering agreements and links with more than 80 DISCOMs.
These changes can reduce paperwork, but the live application decides what appears for your connection. Do not copy a no-fee claim from another state. Check the selected DISCOM, consumer category and current portal step.
The update also reported around 23,000 third-party quality inspections. A later inspection does not replace your own checks at handover. Match serial numbers, collect test records and learn the shutdown procedure before final payment.
Five checks before you apply
- Use the official portal. Apply at pmsuryaghar.gov.in.
- Check your roof. Mark shade, water tanks, weak areas and the space needed for safe access.
- Use your electricity bills. Look at units used over the last 12 months. Do not size solar from the bill amount alone.
- Compare at least three quotes. Match the panel, inverter, structure, protection, warranty and total price.
- Keep every record. Save the application, quote, invoice, equipment serial numbers, inspection papers and bank proof.
Fast growth is good news. A careful home check is still more important than the national number.
