PM Surya Ghar subsidy searches often lead to two practical questions: “How much will I get?” and “Where do I register?” The amount is simple once you know the system size. The process needs more care because the application, installation details, meter work and bank claim must line up.
This guide follows the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy operational guidelines and the live scheme process available at review time. Prices, state procedures and portal screens can change. Treat a vendor’s WhatsApp message as a lead, not as the rule.

For example, a qualifying 2.5 kW system in a standard state gets ₹30,000 × 2 plus ₹18,000 × 0.5, which is ₹69,000. A 3 kW, 5 kW or 6 kW household system has the same usual maximum central amount of ₹78,000.
The higher category includes Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, the North Eastern states including Sikkim, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep. At 3 kW, the maximum is ₹85,800.
Some states may add support. Do not include a state amount in your budget until the National Portal or a current government order confirms that your application qualifies.
Who is eligible?
The scheme’s residential central financial assistance, or CFA, supports grid-connected rooftop solar tied to a residential electricity connection. The official guidelines cover systems on a roof, terrace, balcony, elevated structure and certain building-integrated designs.
You need a valid consumer account with the local electricity distribution company, usually called the DISCOM. The equipment and process must meet the scheme conditions. In particular:
- The application must go through the PM Surya Ghar National Portal.
- The installer must be registered on the National Portal.
- The solar modules must meet the Domestic Content Requirement for subsidised work.
- The DISCOM must complete the required inspection and approve the project.
- The system must use an approved grid-connected metering arrangement.
Commercial and industrial connections do not receive this residential CFA. An off-grid system is also outside it. Group housing societies and resident welfare associations have a separate formula for common facilities, subject to the per-household and total capacity limits in the guidelines.
How to apply on the PM Surya Ghar portal
- Open the official site. Use pmsuryaghar.gov.in. Check the domain before entering personal details.
- Register your connection. Select the state and DISCOM, then use the consumer number shown on your electricity bill. Keep the connection name and bill details consistent.
- Submit the rooftop application. Follow the feasibility or deemed-approval status shown for your DISCOM. Rules for systems up to 10 kW have been simplified, but the portal and local regulator decide the working process.
- Choose a registered vendor. Compare the equipment, total price, generation estimate, warranties, structure and service terms. Registration is a scheme requirement, not proof that every quote is good.
- Install and document the system. The vendor installs the plant. The required system details, serial numbers, documents and geo-tagged photographs must then be uploaded.
- Complete inspection and metering. The DISCOM verifies the system, completes the applicable metering agreement and approves the claim or asks for corrections.
- Finish the bank claim. Confirm the beneficiary bank details and complete the e-token or subsidy claim steps shown in your portal account.
The guidelines say the CFA will be processed within 15 days of DISCOM approval. That does not mean the whole project takes 15 days. Vendor work, inspection, net meter installation and correction queues happen before the approval clock starts.
Documents and details to keep ready
The exact upload list can change by stage and DISCOM. In practice, start with a recent electricity bill, consumer number, mobile number, identity details requested by the portal and bank proof for the beneficiary.
After installation, retain the itemised invoice, module and inverter make and model, serial numbers, capacity details, geo-tagged site photographs, commissioning records, meter agreement and inspection documents. The bank proof may be a cancelled cheque, bank statement, passbook copy or another document accepted by the portal.
What you still pay after subsidy
The scheme does not set the final retail quote. You and the vendor agree on the price. As a broad planning range, a standard residential on-grid system can cost about ₹60,000 to ₹80,000 per kW before subsidy, though roof work, structure height, equipment and location can move the figure.
If a 3 kW system costs ₹2.10 lakh and receives ₹78,000, the net cost is about ₹1.32 lakh. Pay the gross price and cash-flow stages stated in your contract, then account for the subsidy only when the portal process succeeds. Do not let a quotation hide the gross price by showing only an “after subsidy” number.
A battery does not raise the central assistance because CFA uses solar module DC capacity. It can add ₹1 lakh or more to a small home system, so value it for backup rather than assuming it improves payback.

Is there a subsidy last date?
The MNRE operational guidelines state an implementation period up to 31 March 2027. This is not a reason to leave an application until the final weeks, and it is not a guarantee that rules or budgets will stay unchanged. Search interest around “solar subsidy last date” rose by 250% in the 12-month Google Trends view we reviewed, which helps explain why old or unsupported deadline claims spread quickly.
Use the notice section of the National Portal and MNRE for any extension, closure or changed condition. Your DISCOM may also publish processing dates that affect meter or inspection work.
Five mistakes that delay a claim
- Installing before completing the required portal stage.
- Using a vendor or module that does not meet the scheme condition.
- Entering a capacity or serial number that differs from the installed equipment.
- Using bank details that do not match the accepted beneficiary record.
- Assuming a verbal promise overrides a portal correction or DISCOM inspection.
